Belogradchik Rocks
Belogradchik Rocks
Belogradchik rocks are on the tentative list of UNESCO and they were nominated to be listed among the 7 World Wonders of Nature.
The sight is full of legends and we are eager to share them with you. One of them links the natural phenomena in Northwestern Bulgaria to the mythical land of Plato’s Atlantis. Atlantis was a city state that possessed so many resources that even the city wall was gold-plated, including jewels. There was abundance of marvelous nature, fertile soil and exotic wildlife.
The founders of Atlantis were half god, half human. They created an advanced, utopian civilization that existed for more than 9 000 years and became a great naval power.
The legend of Atlantis is a story about a moral, spiritual people. But they became greedy and immoral, and Gods became angry because the people had lost their way. As punishment Gods sent one terrible night of fire and earthquakes that caused Atlantis to sink into the sea. A natural disaster put an end to one of the most advanced civilizations in mankind history. There are many theories about where Atlantis was — in the Mediterranean Sea, in Black Sea, under Antarctica or under Belogradchik rocks in Northwestern Bulgaria.
Belogradchik fortress is one of the main tourist attractions in the area and it is open for visit. It was built during Roman time and in ancient times it used to have a defense purpose. The rock formations in the area served as a natural protection, as fortified walls were practically only built from the northwest and southeast, with the yard being surrounded by rocks up to 70 m high from the other sides. Today after a short hike and some efforts, travelers get the chance to enjoy a wonderful panorama view of the mountainous area.
